Dennis was originally settled in 1639 as part of Yarmouth by John Crowe. Not having much land for farming, this area relied heavily on fishing and ocean industries. In 1793, it separated from Yarmouth and became the town of Dennis (after its resident minister, Josiah Dennis). Today, tourism and the vacation industry are the biggest industries in Dennis as Dennis is home to 16 ocean beaches and 2 fresh water beaches. 5 distinct villages make up the town: Dennis Port, East Dennis, South Dennis, West Dennis and Dennis (including North Dennis).
